"Come suffer a slow CATSUOMATICDEATH” says 21st Century CATSUOMANN, the leader
of the band who identifies himself, as a lover of catsuo, the common fish
"bonito" at the Sushi-Bar. Who are they? They are an alternative
rock band;it's an Occult Grunge Rock 'n Roll band whose psychological-
geographical location is somewhere among Bret Easton Ellis’ American Psycho,
William Faulkner’s Absalom Absalom, Iggy and the Stooges’ Raw Power, and
The Doors’ The End, and the Japanese legendary rock'n' roller Ozaki Yutaka.
A teenager looking skinny Japanese boy that loves Iggy Pop screams his
mysterious Faulkner-like English poetry in a Chinese Classical Poetry manner
with a deadly high and low pitch, whose voice and wild guitar sound are
empowered by the most hip & hysteric & sexy & destructive female
drummer of Japan Yukar who has historically supported the Japan Tours for
bands such as Sonic Youth, Beastie Boys, John Spencer and the Blues Explosion,
and Mud Honey through her former internationally famous bands D.M.B.Q.,OOIOO,
Metalchicks. Ikuno is the bassist and she has supported the Japan tour
for the Breeders in the past with her other band Noodles.
CATSUOMATICDEATH is a Tokyo based trio band formed in 2003, who had originally
started out on the Millennium as a cover band of American pops. ranging
from 70’s to 90’s, soon after 21st Century Catsuomann received a Bachelor’s
Degree in Philosophy from Columbia University, N.Y.C., NY.. Couple years
after, while he was working on his Ph.D. Thesis on American Literature
at The University of Tokyo, Graduate School of Humanities and Sciences,
he came to the idea of forming an experimental band CATSUOMATICDEATH with
an banal end: A MIXTURE OF 1. English prose ( that are not lyrics with
a classic Chinese poetry style), 2. heavyhowling, Roller, Gyration oriented
guitar, and 3. the rhythms of James Brown and John Bonham of Led Zeppelin,
4. Japanese mourning KIMONOS called "mofuku," 5.English Silk
Hat. It became a wild mixture: A Japanese freaque physique with an Englishman's
attitude on top. God knows what it is. . . it embodies exactly for what
the band is: English prose rock'n' roll by "Japan-fetish" Japanese
locals.
As a result of proceeding its fetishized way, they, by accident, have contributed in upbringing a gigantic HYPE with other fetishized local bands, and by accident, got their major omnibus “Pub Rocket GabiGabi—History of Tokyo’s Pub Rock Scene” released from Universal Music Japan (CDcode:UVCR1001). In addition, six months later, CATSUOMATICDEATH got their maxi single out in December 2005 “Charlie vs Sammy” as well. The CD has brought another hype as a Japanese grunge band and TOWER RECORDS Japan had put their CD on their front for three months lined with so many other major bands(WHAT A JOKE! HAHA!!!).
In the next year 2006, their song made a hit in i-Tunes and was invited to tour to Germany. The tour "Black Current tour 2006” starting from The Kaisekeller” at Hamburg where the Beatles had played their first overseas gig in the Seventies, and their tour went on to, Flensburg, Berlin, Dortmund, Frankfurt, and Munich, 8 places in total, 7 main act shows. On the last day, they were invited to play at "Free&Easy Festival"@Backstage, Munich and shared the stage with the German Techno band Mouse on Mars.
Other tours they did: 2007 March "Black Current Tour East Asia,"
in HONGKONG and CHINA as main act. Though it was a three gig tour, they
got on four major magazines (mistakenly on fashion magazines like similar
to VOGUE) and on a TV show(mistakenly here too! Yay!)
In summer 2007, from August22nd to September 24th, the band was again invited
to play for 21 Main act shows in Germany and played at the "Viertel
Festival Bremen" as main act in front of 8000 audience. The fruitful
tour brought the band to cover the top page of the largest Japanese Music
site "JaME"in Europe and now getting ready to release a full
album both in Japan and in Europe.
While the band have been touring overseas,they not only befriended many
overseas artists, but also Japanese artistswho plays overseas. The band
players are personally linked to internationallyrecognized bands such as
BUFFALO DAUGHTER, SHONEN KNIFE, CIBO-MATTO, 5'6'7'8's, GUITAR WOLF, BOREDOMS,
METALCHICKS, D.M.B.Q., OOIOO, POLYSICS, MELT-BANANA, DENKI-GROOVE, ELECTRIC
EEL SHOCK, eX-Girl, and so many others... etc.. CATSUOMATICDEATH will go
overseas as much as they can because they are a fish that tours throughout
their live for life, whether that'll be E.U. or U.S.A, or wherever the
FOREIGN CURRNECY is good for them.
